Big Island Guide Travel Guide. Kilauea glow. Great view from the top of Pu'u Ku'ili at Kekaha K. However, after half way through the Big Islandbook, I realized I am not going to be able to go around the whole island visiting most of the wonderful places mentioned in the book in just 5 days.

So, I decided to focus on a few areas. I spend about 2 evening reading the books, and another 2 hours on the plane reading the book cover to cover.

When I arrived in Hawaii, I found the following problems: - The books are printed on good quality paper. But they are heavy! That makes me having to carry two heavy books when I am having hard time with my luggage with all the snorkeling gears, cameras, etc. Since each chapters is written like an essay, once you found the keyword, you have to look at pages, and then fast reading through the pages to see if some information you have read before is there. I wish they could just give an address or a cross section where I can punch into my GPS.

My suggestion: Take notes as you read the book. Find a good road map online and print it out, and mark the places you plan to visit. If I haven't gone back and re-read many pages, and take notes, those direction would be meaningless because there is no way for me to read the book while driving. And while driving, I would not have remembered every single interesting points that I have planned to visit while reading the book the first time.

I wish the books can be better organized, or split into multiple volumes. For example, one for carrying with you while actually doing the hikes. I wish the maps can be removed from the book. I wish the photos can be placed next to the next. Sometimes, when I see a photo, I have to look for the texts. I wish it would be easier to find information if I plan to just drive for the day, or plan to hike, or plan to do some snorkeling or diving.

The information on restaurants and shops are not very useful. I would trust Yelp or Tripadvisors reviews more. That's where weight can be reduced also. Fourteen days on the Big Island and what a marvelous experience it was! I had given great reviews of the book to friends and relatives and, oh yea, to Amazon too but the real value of the book was in the actual usage "on site.

My wife developed some pretty significant health issues almost immediately after we landed in Kona. At one point we considered cutting the trip short and heading home early. This is where this book proved to be invaluable. Not only did I have a "bucket list" prepared long before I boarded the plane to Hawaii, I was able to rearrange our itinerary to balance what was most worthy to what was practical. Some activities were just impossible due to the exertion required when the medical problems started.

I would have spent 18 hours a day scaling cliffs, meeting aquatic natives, and generally trying to hit every nook and cranny on the island. Instead the health issues reduced the amount of time we could spend on tourist stuff to about 10 hours a day, and most of that low exertion and low duration.

When we had doubts about what we could manage to do we instantly revered to this book and it never failed to provide sound advise and correct information.

BRAVO to the author and publisher. Hands down there is no better resource for planning and executing your trip to the marvelous island of Hawaii! The only thing I hate about this book is that I'm reading it instead of living it!

This book does cause psychological problems too; cognitive dissonance. Cracking the cover instantly reveals things to do, places to go, people to see. Concentration spans are reduced, dreams are affected, your flesh will crave sea breezes, and your soul hunger for the sights, sounds, and spirit of the islands.

Well balanced, well illustrated, fun to read, fairly current, and enticing. If the Hawaiian tourist bureau hasn't sent these guys a check in recognition of the wonderful job they did in making and I do mean MAKING people hunger to visit the island they ought to. My plans to visit the island were delayed by medical problems but so help me if I have to carried off the plane on a stretcher so be it, I'm going to get there and when I do you can rest assured that my shorts will have a pocket big enough to carry this gem along with me.

We will use this book for our first trip to the Big Island in April and I have found this guidebook to be as well written as the author's Ultimate Kauai Guidebook that I've used through every edition. We had visited Kauai three or four times before we found the Ultimate Kauai Guidebook and, other than an outdated restaurant review I found, everything in it was on the money and served to open a completely new and wonderful Kauai to us.

Road signs that frightened us in the past proved to be nothing to fear if "the book" said it was a public road. Places the rental car companies told us to avoid turned out to be accessible if warnings in "the book" were followed.

Things we found in other guides that turned out to be disapointing were described as such when we found this authors opinions of them. I have enough faith in the author to feel that we'll be getting a head start on our familiarization of the Big Island simply by reading his Big Island guide ahead of time and preparing a plan based on his recomendations. There are no better Hawaii guide books anywhere. Oh, I wrote to the author with my opinion of that restaurant and he must have gone back to check it as the next edition described it exactly as we had found it.

One person found this helpful. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. A great book for a great holiday destination. Report abuse. This book gives the most detailed information about the Big Island available today. Can't go wrong with this travel guide.

I'd purchased the Fodor's and Frommer's guide books on Hawaii, which cover all islands. Andrew Doughty's books were recommended to me by a Hawaiian lady I rented a cottage from. I'd seen them while searching on Amazon, but I thought I could save money by buying the "all island" books instead. These island specific books by Doughty are much better than the Fodor's and Frommer's "all island" books in my opinion I bought Doughty's Big Island and Kauai books. Not that the Fodor's or Frommer's Hawaii books were bad, they were just not nearly as good.

Doughty's recommendations helped make for an awesome family vacation on the Big Island and Kauai. His writing is readable and entertaining. We carried the books in the car wherever we went. Each book has an accompanying smart phone app sold separately for iPhone or Android that is a great complement to the book.

It uses the phone GPS to tell you what is nearby and even shows your exact position when on a hiking trail out of cell phone coverage area! I will be buying his Maui book and accompanying smart phone app before I return to Hawaii to visit that island. A friend told me I have to buy this guide for my trip to the big island.

It sure was a good idea. There is plenty background information in it and the writing style is very entertaining. I met some people on hawaii who saw that I have this book. They aslo confirmed, that this is the best book you can have. Also it's cool to have it on the plane and read a little when on your way to honolulu or kona, it's also available on the islands in every ABC Store.

Terrific book. This is the second book we have purchased after giving away our first one that is now 4 years old. We bought 2 copies of this latest edition and are giving one to family members who are travelling to the Big Island next year.

We will use this new one to search out all the places we missed on our previous 2 trips. There is lots of accurate and detailed info on where to go and what to see. It has become our bible while there and currently plan to spend 6 weeks there this coming winter so will be using the book to plan our next excursion.
